Racism and Christianity, Christopher Carter and Seth Schoen – Video and Discussion Outline
Rev. Dr. Christopher Carter and Dr. Seth Schoen discuss the racism within the context of Christianity with Rev. Keith King.
Questions for a Black or Racially Mixed Youth Group:
- How does using the language of “high church” perpetuate racism?
- Do you see this model in our churches? In youth programming, or in the overall mission of the church, or both?
Questions for a Predominately White Youth Group:
- What does it mean to think about Christianity being used as a tool for perpetuating racism?
- Carter talks about images of God that are elevated as being normative, fostering the image of a white, male, cisgendered God at the expense of others. What needs to happen theologically for us to view someone as a fellow human, and as created in God’s image?
- “The Image of God, the Mission of God, and Imitating Christ” are three steps that Carter lays out for addressing the issue of racism in Christianity. Do our youth programs model this, following these steps? Where are we faltering?
