Lesson developed byJill Olds

  • Laptop or media device with the Scene of Obi-Wan’s death from Star Wars: A New Hope (YouTube clip.)

Gather

  • Begin with a check in with members
  • Open with prayer
  • Read Luke 23-24 with each person reading a few verses

Engage

Select the option that best suits your group’s needs:

Exercise Option 1:

  • Reflect together on what it was like to read the words of Luke 23-24 and how it felt.
  • Talk about composting with the kids. If you have access to this, show them a compost pile, or pictures, and talk about what it means that dead things enriches the soil for new life.

Exercise Option 2:

  • Watch the video clip together. (YouTube clip)
  • Discuss how the death of Obi-Wan allows for Luke to grow stronger. “Run Luke, run,” is the first of many times Obi-Wan continues to teach Luke. His future presence is much like the Holy Spirit’s for us.

Reflect

Reflect Together on the Following Questions:

1. What does Jesus’ new life mean, and how does that connect with what we saw him teach?
2. Where are you in the story? Are you a disbelieving disciples, someone spreading the news, or somewhere in between?
3. What does it mean to you to consider that life always wins, that love always wins, that new life always comes out of terrible things? And what does that mean for how we live?
4. How is God/Jesus/the HS present with us in that new life?

Send Forth
