Miroslav Volf – Forgiveness as a Gift

Dr. Miroslav Volf sat for this interview following his lecture entitled, “Forgiveness and Joy.” The lecture is part of the Joy and Adolescent Faith & Flourishing Series presented by the Yale Youth Ministry Institute and the Yale Center for Faith & Culture at Yale Divinity School. Here, Dr. Volf discusses forgiveness as a gift.

Lecture Abstract:

If you have seriously wronged someone, it is a joyous thing to be told: “It’s OK. I don’t count it against you!” But is there joy in offering apology and in restoring a measure of what your wrongdoing has taken away? And if you yourself have been wronged, is there joy in forgiving? Is not revenge – “sweet revenge” – more joyful than forgiveness?

About the Speakers:

Dr. Miroslav Volf is the Henry B. Wright Professor of Systematic Theology at Yale Divinity School and the Founding Director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture. He is author or editor of 20 books and over 70 scholarly articles, including Exclusion and Embrace: A Theological Exploration of Identity, Otherness, and Reconciliation (1996), which received the 2002 Louisville Grawemeyer Award.
