Today’s children and youth have lived through so many soul-provoking experiences in 2020. With the advent of COVID-19 illness and death, quarantines, graphic depictions of violence, the prospect of going back to school in a socially distanced fashion and then possibly returning to all online learning, and difficult imagery and discussion around issues of race and justice, youth have a lot of questions—and some even have deep concerns and fears. Add this to the daily, already complex lives of many youth in this country and the resultant mixture cries out for a resilient response for both them and those who work with them. This webinar will highlight various strategies for promoting resilience in, for and among today’s generations of youth.

Shifting Focus: Youth Ministry in 2020 and Beyond
This Tuesday, October 6, from 3:30-4:30 pm, our very own, Jill Olds, YMI Director will be a speaker at the UCC’s Shifting Focus: Youth Ministry in 2020 and Beyond. UCC pastors from a variety of settings discuss how this year in particular has greatly shifted the needs and expectations of those engaged in youth ministry. Register here.
James Martin, S.J., author, editor-at-large at America magazine, and consultant to the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, will give Yale Divinity School’s annual Ensign Lecture at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21.
Martin will speak on “Building a Bridge: Welcoming LGBTQ Catholics.” The lecture will premiere on the Divinity School’s YouTube channel. For more information go here.
Anti-Racism as Spiritual Praxis
The Rev. Dr. Christopher Carter and Dr. Seth Schoen, University of San Diego faculty and founders of Racial Resilience, have been working with us for the past few months to create resources on anti-racism. On July 30, they delivered a lecture on Racial Resilience: Anti-Racism as Spiritual Praxis and have since been engaged in a six-part seminar to dive deeper into the work of approaching anti-racism work through the compassion practice. The Gospel of Mark
In September, the Rev. Dr. Allen Hilton began a free 8-week, online Yale Bible Study on the Gospel of Mark. See what he has to say about how Mark can help us to understand Jesus as the son of God here and explore Mark’s gospel on the Yale Bible Study website. Taken from the most popular course in Yale’s 300+ year history, learn the misconceptions about happiness, annoying tricks of the mind that lead us to think the way we do, and the research that can help us change. The goal will be to leave the conversation prepared to change your own habits and to help youth incorporate wellness activities into their lives.
December 2; 12 – 1:30pm: A New Vision of Youth Ministry Beyond the Walls of the Church: Mission Work and Outdoor Ministry with Andrew Wicks and Rev. Ryan Gackenheimer
Explore the ways in which outdoor ministry and mission work are evolving and engaging youth today (in person and virtually) as well as providing tangible tools for youth ministry during the COVID-19 pandemic.
February 3; 12 – 1:30pm: A Journey with LGBTQ+ and Immigrant Youth with Yadi Martínez-Reyna
Yadi will provide resources and ideas on how to create a safe and brace space for them and all young people. Through lecture, dialogue, and open conversation, Yadi will provide an opportunity to share with you their social, academic, and ethical experiences working with the youth and providing some working practices that will help you also learn and guide your work with them.
March 3; 12 – 1:30pm: Innovation, Imagination, and Frustration with Rev. Matt Overton
This webinar will explore some basic ideas to stimulate your imagination about how to impact teens/young adults in your community through innovative thinking. We will look at an innovative model of ministry that has been developed in the Pacific Northwest and it’s engagement in the world of social enterprise. Also take a brief look at how to finance new forms of ministry to help impact those teens.
April 7; 12 – 1:30pm: Adventures in Space-Making with the Rev. Phiwa Langeni
Learn how to better engage with LGBTQ+ youth in your setting, practical tips on language, pronouns, and other queer-related issues, and gain insights on simple changes you can make in your own practices to create space for LGBTQ+ youth and others you intend to serve.
