Lorien Carter is an Associate Professor of Practice at the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. She teaches graduate level Social Work Practice and Administration courses in Foundations and Children, Youth and Family concentration, including Social Work Practice with Individuals, Families and Groups, Social Work Practice with Youth in Families and Developing Programs in Health and Social Service Settings. She is the Lead Teacher for Social Work Practice with Individuals, Families and Groups and serves on the MSW Program Committee and the MSW Curriculum Committee as the Chair of the Foundations curriculum. She was awarded the“Excellence in Teaching” faculty award in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011.
In her faculty role, Lorien not only teaches the next generation of social workers to be passionate and prepared, engaged and effective but also works closely with other faculty and field instructors to support their efforts with students. In 2011, Lorien co-created and co-led a highly regarded Teaching Toolbox workshop series for faculty. In 2015, she began a pilot of an instructional coaching initiative to enhance teaching excellence at the Brown School. Between 2009 and 2013, she co-trained more than 300 St. Louis area field instructors in the Brown School’s Evidence Based Practice model.
Lorien is passionate about youth development and loves working directly with teenagers as they strive to become healthy and happy young adults. An MSW graduate of the Brown School, she has 10 years of direct Social Work practice with adolescents in public school and health care settings, spending the first 4 years of her career as a high school social worker followed by 6 years of program coordination and management experience at a hospital based teen pregnancy clinic.
Lorien continues to be actively involved in the professional Social Work field. She provides outcomes and performance management consultation services to non-profit organizations through EMD (Experience Makes the Difference) Consulting Group. She is a trainer and curriculum writer for the Wyman Teen Outreach Program; an evidence based and nationally recognized youth development and pregnancy prevention program model. She is an advisory board member for several St. Louis health and social service organizations. She is also a highly sought after facilitator for non-profit agency staff trainings on topics related to adolescent development, groupwork facilitation, logic models and professional teambuilding.
Lorien is a past president and a current executive board member for the Teen Pregnancy & Prevention Partnership – a statewide nonprofit organization which promotes adolescent sexual health and teen pregnancy prevention by providing education and networking opportunities for health, social service, education and youth serving professionals and legislative advocacy for science based approaches to teen sexual health education.
