A bible study on the Gospel of Luke for youth based on the Yale Bible Study series.

Practice Duration 60 minutes
Lesson developed byJill Olds
Materials Checklist
  • Bibles or copies of Luke 22
  • Whiteboard, chalkboard or large print paper on the wall
  • Markers or chalk
  • Laptop or media device with the movie “Jesus Christ Superstar” (whatever version you prefer)

Gather

  • Begin with a check in with members
  • Read Luke 22 with each person reading a few verses
  • Open with prayer

Engage

Select the option that best suits your group’s needs:

Exercise Option 1:

  • Reflect on what it was like to read the words in Luke 22, and how it felt.
  • Create a timeline of Jesus’ final days as it is read, either on a whiteboard, chalkboard, or large paper posted to the wall. Silently, have each person come up and write their name next to the part that they found most moving. Talk about why.

Exercise Option 2:

Watch the movie as a group. (Select whatever version you prefer)

Reflect

Reflect Together on the Following Questions:

1. How does it feel to see/listen to this story enacted?
2. How does it feel to see this man—who taught all of these things we’ve been studying—killed?
3. Where are you in the story? Are you the jeering crowd, the silent mourners, Jesus himself, the guards, Pilate, etc.? Why?
4. How does it feel to end the story here, and not read about Easter right now? Why do you think we’re focusing on this sad stuff, without jumping too quickly to the happy ending?

Send Forth

Close the lesson in prayer (either the leader or a group member)
