iNDIEFLIX Education has sparked a global conversation about racism through screenings of its documentary, “RACE To Be Human.” On February 6, the Yale Youth Ministry Institute will hold a special virtual screening of the documentary to open up a dialogue between individuals, community leaders, and experts. The event will feature a viewing of the 46-minute film, followed by an informative panel discussion, led by YMI Director, Jill Olds, with special guests Jason Craige Harris ’12 M.A.R., Mercy Herrera ’13 M.A.R. and Annie Hipps. Jason and Mercy were involved in the development of the film and Annie is one of the featured youth in the documentary.

RACE To Be Human is a documentary film addressing the impact of race and racism on mental health through the lens of students, experts, and educators, as well as how we can collectively move towards equality. RTBH explores how to foster healthy conversations about race and racism.

This documentary shares micro-stories to define commonly used terms we all use when talking about racism. The film delves into the effects of race and racism on individuals and our communities through candid interviews with kids and teens, who discuss their experiences with race and racism, and its impact on their lives and relationships; expert perspectives on the history, present-day occurrences, and effects of racism; essential definitions and guidelines that help create safe spaces for cross-cultural dialogues about race and racism; and discussion around allyship. Also, what action and accountability may look like to start shaping a more inclusive and equitable society today.

The screening will take place on February 6 at 7:00 pm Eastern on Zoom and is free of charge. YMI participants will also receive access to RACE To Be Human support materials to assist in facilitating these conversations in their own churches and communities.
